Nina In New York: We’ve Won The War On Imaginary Bed Bugs

New York City is using specifically trained beagles, like this one, in the battle to eradicate bed bugs. (Photo by STAN HONDA/AFP/Getty Images)

A lighthearted look at news, events, culture and everyday life in New York.______________________

Just the other day I passed an exterminators truck on 49th street and I thought to myself, where has all the hysterical bed bug coverage gone? A year ago, the sight of that vehicle would have sent me into itchyhyperventilation. Now, I barely flinch. And though part of that is due to intensive psychological rehabilitation, I cant help but make the connection that the more headlines there are announcing the bed bug invasion, the crazier I feel. So conversely, the news items I read on the subject, the less stressed I feel. Just thinking about this made me launch headfirst into a whirlpool of neurosis, unfortunately.

Are there fewer bed bugs now, all of a sudden, when every report last year claimed the problem was only going to get exponentially worse until finally the human race would become entirely consumed by bugs and slowly become them? No, that seemed unlikely! (I mean, the part about there being fewer bugs, not the other stuff. Im pretty sure that other stuff is exactly what the news people were saying.) Ive simply let my guard down. How sloppy and reckless of me! Or perhaps there was a winter lull and the summer season is about to ramp back up. Its about to start all over again. I need to resume vigilance.

More: NYCs Bed Bug Guide

Only now Ive come to find out that there really are fewer bed bugs in the city compared to last year. Or rather, there are fewerreports of bed bugs compared to last year. And fewer violations have been handed out. At least, according to the city, who feels their efforts to educate the public and hold landlords and business owners accountable are working. Natch. Also according to at least one exterminator, who attributed his decrease in calls to the fact that a lot of the hype has disappeared.

Ah. So, essentially, the number ofimaginarybed bug infestations has gone down. Well. I guess Im living proof of that.

NOTSOFAST says another exterminator interviewed for the piece. While the citys 311 hotline may be getting fewer calls, he certainly isnt and wants us to know that bed bugs are as active as ever! Its just that people are dealing privately rather than reporting their landlords to the city. Which on the one hand means landlords are taking better initiative and responsibility. On the other hand, this guy obviously has a stake in the general publics level of fear and paranoia staying at very healthy red alert levels. Imaginary emergency calls could be this guys bread and butter! Between me and my brother alone, the pest control industry made a pretty penny without having to do much heavy lifting at all. The dog sniffs a few times here, they lay a few gas bombs there, bibbidy bobbidy boo your fictitious bugs go poof.

So whom to believe? Im going to have to go with the city on this one, for purely self-preservation purposes. Id rather exterminate all of the hallucinated bed bugs from my brain. I think they were always more numerous than the real, live ones.

That being said, Im still not sure when Ill ever enter a movie theater in the city again. I mean, please. Lets not get carried away.

Sleep Tight, Don't Let The Hotel Bed Bugs Bite

without comments

COARSEGOLD, Calif. (KMPH) –

Bed bugs are a problem throughout the United States and one local casino hotel knows that first hand.

Officials with the Madera County Environmental Health Department confirm one of the towers of the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino was forced to shut down to get rid of the pest.

KMPH News tried to get a comment from a Chukchansi spokesperson about the bed bugs, but our calls were never returned.

We called the hotel, and were told one tower is down for renovations, and won’t be available until sometime in June.

Killing the pests is difficult; one technique working across the country is using heat. It involves using air ducts to raise the temperature in the infested area to more than 115 degrees for several hours — essentially baking the bed bugs to death.

Bed bugs do not carry diseases, but their bite is uncomfortable.

Bed bugs are back – and UC Davis has answers

without comments

For those itching to find out more about bed bugs, there’s a UC Davis talk that promises to provide the answers.

Tanya Drlik, integrated pest management coordinator for Contra Costa County, will speak on campus May 3 about bed bug infestations.

After a half century of life mostly without bed bugs, the tiny pests are back, said Drlik in a University of California, Davis press release.

Bed bugs infest luxury hotels, skid row apartments, hospitals, waiting rooms taxis and buses. Drilik said they have “no regard for wealth or class – everyone is vulnerable.”

The insects are difficult to control due to their tiny size and growing resistance to pesticide. Rampant outbreaks of the pests are prevalent in some parts of the country, including New York City.

Drilk will give her talk as part of a Northern California Entomology Society meeting, which includes other experts speaking on various topics. The public is invited to attend after paying the annual $10 membership dues.

The meeting begins at 9:15 a.m. May 3 in the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility on Bee Biology Road.

For lunch reservations contact ecmussen@ucdavis.edu or (530) 752-0472.

Bed bugs rampant locally, nationally and globally

without comments

DAVIS Bed bugs may be little, but they are a big problem infestations are rampant locally, nationally and globally, says Tanya Drlik, integrated pest management (IPM) coordinator of Contra Costa County who will speak at the University of California, Davis campus at the May 3 meeting of the Northern California Entomology Society.

“We’ve had a reprieve from bed bugs for about 50 years, but now they’re back,” said Drlik, who will discuss “The Resurgence of Bed Bugs and Current Effective Control Methods” at 9:45 a.m. in the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility on Bee Biology Road.

The society-membership is open to the general public, meeting 9:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Drlik is one of five speakers on topics ranging from bed bugs to lacewings to endangered species.

Drlik, who formed the Bed Bug Task Force to help prepare Contra Costa County to meet the challenges of the mounting bed bug infestation, says that bed bugs “have no regard for wealth or class everyone is vulnerable. Bed bugs can be found all across the country in apartment buildings, hotels and motels, private residences, hospitals, waiting rooms, fire station, taxis and buses…and the list goes on. They’ve infested four-star hotels and penthouses as well as homeless shelters and rundown apartment buildings.”

“Judging by history and the experience of other jurisdictions across the country, the problem is only going to increase, and more and more public buildings and homes will experience infestations,” said Drlik, who has a master’s degree in ecosystem management and nearly 40 years of experience in the field of IPM. “Bed bugs are difficult to control because of their small size, their secretive nature and their growing resistance to the pesticides we have at our disposal. Poverty, clutter, and poor housekeeping do not cause bed bug infestations, but they make eliminating infestations much more difficult.”

Bed bugs “can be seen in epidemic proportions in some areas of the United States, including New York City and central and southwestern Ohio,” said Drlik, adding that since 2004, New York City has experienced a 2,277 percent increase in complaints about bed bugs in the five boroughs (source: New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development). “Colleagues in the Franklin County Health Department in central Ohio have commented to us that they were completely unprepared for the rapidity with which bed bugs spread throughout their county.”

“Bed bugs are far more common in urban areas, and the poor, the elderly, and the mentally ill suffer disproportionately because they do not have the funds, the information, and often the wherewithal, to eliminate infestations,” she said.

The Nor-Cal Entomology Society agenda:

The Department of Pesticide Regulation will grant continuing education hours: two and a half hours of “laws,” and an hour and a half of “other,” according to Nor Cal Entomology Society president Bob Case of Concord, retired deputy agricultural commissioner from the Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture.

Bed Bugs Found On Students' Backpacks

without comments

SIOUX FALLS, SD –

The Sioux Falls Health Department has received reports of bed bugs being foundin a Sioux Falls schoolon kids’ backpacks.

Just in the last year, more cases of bed bugs have been reported all over the city, keeping exterminators busier than ever. The health department has been responding by creating more awareness about preventing the problem before it starts.

“A bed bug can find its way anywhere,”SF Health Program Coordinator Denise Patton said.

Patton’s phone has almost become a part of her because she has had a spike in calls from people itching to know how to stop bed bugs. The most important thing to know is not let the name fool you; bed bugs are more like hitchhikers.

“They can get into electronics, the walls and all sorts of things that aren’t easy to see,” Patton said.

Schools are not the problem because the nocturnal insectsbreed and feed near beds and couches at night.

“There’s a lot of tile floors, metal chairs,” Patton said, noting bed bugs do not survive in schools. “Students getting up and down in classroom chairs and at desks and lunch room tables and that sort of thing aren’t really conducive environments.”

Preventing the critters from getting into schools and on other kids is as simple as vacuuming your house frequently and using your washer and dryer. Justin Bosma, an exterminator with P&K Pest Control,is not worried about job security.

“Every year, they just incrementally increase. It exponentially builds on itself until there’s a plateau. I don’t think we’ve seen that yet. It’s just getting worse,” Bosma said.

The Spring Branch Independent School District is letting parents know that bed bugs were found on one of its campuses.

The bugs were found at Hollibrook Elementary School. A teacher spotted the bugs and asked for a pest inspection. That inspection did prove there were bed bugs in a classroom.

Spring Branch ISD sent out this statement: “The classroom has now been treated and cleaned and, as an extra precaution, the students and teacher have been assigned to a separate classroom.”

Bed Bugs Increasing in Wichita Falls Homes

without comments

The pest is bed bugs.

Last year, they were a big problem for businesses in the Wichita Falls area and now, exterminators say they’re becoming a big nuisance inside homes.

We warn you… the video you’re about to see may be disturbing.

Bed bugs are small but they can quickly become a big problem.

Even living in the lap of luxury doesn’t keep them away.

Last year, bed bugs became unwanted guests at this Ritz Carlton hotel in New York City.

And this year, local exterminators say these annoying insects are checking out and heading into homes.

“What’s happened with all the world of travel, they just travel the world and they get in suitcases. They get in purses. They get in people’s shoes or on the bottom of them… on their socks. You don’t know it. They’re so tiny at first,” says Joan Riddles with Top-O-Texas Pest Control.

Riddles and other exterminators say they’re starting to leave their marks on Texomans as they sleep at night.

Riddles also says one or two bed bugs can quickly turn into hundreds and even then she says they can still be hard to find.
