Bed bugs closed a school in Luzerne County Friday for the second time in a month.

Officials with the Wyoming Area School District said an office at J.F.Kennedy Elementary School in Exeter must be retreated for bed bugs.

The school was closed for a day late last month when the parasites first showed up.

Exterminators treated the school but not the bugs are back.

Bed bugs don't bite Sioux Falls

Good night, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite. The well-known nursery rhyme is more of a reality than you might think or hope. On Thursday the Sioux Falls Health Department held a bed bug panel to raise awareness about the pests.

If your skin isn’t crawling yet it will be soon. You also may want to double check your bed sheets tonight. Bed bugs are on the rise across the country, South Dakota is no exception.

“We have seen a steady increase of bed bug samples being sent in to our clinic.” Said Buyung Hadi, an entomologist with SDSU.

In the pastfour months theSDSU entomology clinic has identifiedfive bed bug samples. A yearly total of three is considered abnormally high.

“Our message today would be for tenants to talk with landlords, heyI got a problem here can you take a look.” Said Kevin Smith, director of building services for Sioux Falls.

Afew Sioux Falls hotels and apartments have seen bed bug cases and the city health department wants people to be aware.

Tim Nicolai was just one of the landlord’s who stopped by for more information on the pests.

“The main reasonI came down today is to see what our next step is in controlling the issue we have before it gets out of hand in Sioux Falls.” Said Nicolai.

The health department says the first step is finding them.

“The bed bugs themselves will congregate in areas close to their host, which is mainly a bed, you’re stationary, not moving, you’re easy to get to and they have nice little corners and tucks in your mattress where they can hide.” Saidhealth program director Denise Patton.

(Memphis) Students gathered at the front gate of Benjamin Hooks Job Corps Center in Whitehaven. They protested an ongoing problem there; bed bugs.

Im not going to say Job Corps is a bad place, but we want our voices to be heard, said Latoya Daniels who is a student there.

But our conversation was cut short when center directors came out to break up the students gathering.

I was able to see one student had bites all over his arms. Latoya Daniels stuck around and talked to me after everyone else left. She says not enough is being done to get rid of the bed bugs. When she came to center three weeks ago, she was warned by staff.

They told me to bring my own sheets, they were infested with bed bug, said Daniels. I always thought bedbugs were a myth until I got here to Job Corps and then I got bit and people had them in a bag and were showing them around.

Directors of the center say theyre working to get rid of the problem. John Colenberg offered up a statement, The center director along with the regional office and health inspectors are working towards a process to eliminate those issues.

A different director told me off camera they sprayed chemicals as well as used heat treatments to try to get rid of the bugs but he says it has not fixed the problem. A request was made to let the students out early for their summer break so they can get rid of the bugs without putting the health of their students in danger.

I prefer not to get eaten up, Daniels said, as she laughed.

She says shes grateful for the education Job Corps is giving her, but hopes they stand by their word and get the bed bugs out.

When she noticed bed bugs crawling on her arms last fall, she panicked as did her mother, Marie.

One or two at first and then it just kept getting worse, explained Holcomb a tenant of roughly nine months at 85 Park Avenue.

Holcomb complained to her landlord, Joseph Kennedy. An exterminator was called but Holcomb said the bugs soonreturned.

Its disgusting, its horrible, I wish someone would just take care of it fully, said Holcomb.

Bug bites are visible all over her ankles.

She took photos, video and even kept some specimens in plastic bags to prove to the landlord that they existed.

Kennedy declined an on-camera interview with 13WHAM News but acknowledged that bed bugs had been a problem in the past.

He feels this tenant spoke out because he threatened to evict her for not paying May rent on the first.

Bed bug bites got a plane locked down last Thursday, said a report from suntimes.com dated April 26. One passenger of the aircraft was mistaken to have contracted an infectious disease. After discovering that the root cause of the incident were the bed bug bites, BedBugBully.com gave advice how to identify the marks. According to the report, Lise Sievers was suspected to have acquired monkeypox from her trip to Uganda. After receiving a call from La Porte Hospital about her rashes, Center for Disease Control held the plane she was on in Detroit and checked Sievers.

During the stop-over, it was said that the 50-year old called her mother. The report detailed that she told her about the bed bug bites she got from her hotel and the pustules she saw in the boy she’d hoped to adopt. Confused that Sievers was the one with pustules, her mother then called La Porte Hospital for advice. In turn, the hospital informed Center for Disease Control.

After confirming that the rashes Sievers got were not linked to monkeypox, the plane was allowed to continue its flight.

They started looking into the situation after several complaints from residents.Residents tell us they’ve found bugs inside their apartments and on their clothes.The housing authority interim director tells News Channel 12 it’s now taking preventative measures. Rid-A-Pest exterminators are checking rooms one-by-one for bugs. Our cameras were at the new bern towers as crews worked to find the bugs.”They’re going to be doing chemical treatment, heat treatment and utilization of dogs,” said Interim Director of the New Bern Housing Authority, Gerald Wingate.The process should be complete by next week.
